We'll cover 6 different openings and work on initiating with clarity and confidence, avoiding vague or hesitant starts, and sustaining beyond into full scenes.

It is Usain Bolt's world record time in the 100-meter dash. How many things can happen in 9.58 seconds? In this ensemble performance for eight improvisers, we will discover how all those stories can intertwine as they move forward or backward along their respective timelines.

PIERPAOLO - Contact
Physical/eye contact, or lack thereof, can be a huge source of inspiration for scenes, and one that is often overlooked. When someone pats our shoulder, hugs us, looks at us or doesn’t, we feel something; and if we train ourselves to recognize it, this is a source of potentially endless inspiration for our character. We will shift from “what should my character do right now” to “what is my character really feeling right now”, turning the scene from an invention to a discovery. Note: for all exercises and during all games, we will assess and respect physical boundaries. No contact will ever be imposed.

JAVI – Press Start
Remember those legendary PC adventure games? Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, and so on? Well, in Press Start we improvise as the characters of an adventure game, putting ourselves at the service of the audience—the real players—to see if they can solve the mystery and complete the game within 60 minutes.

Every good story contemplates a Shadow. Those characters we wouldn’t even grab coffee with… and yet somehow they fascinate us. What motivates them? What makes them scary? How do we let go of our own values, to embrace those of a criminal? In this workshop we will approach the techniques on how to interpret them credibly, and play memorable villains, with a strong Horror twist, because we will play a showcase at the Halloween Party, wearing our scary costumes.

At the location of the Halloween Party, right before the Party starts, there will be the showcase of the two Mixer shows:

Slow down, speed up, find your pace.
What happens when we slow down? We see more, we listen truly, we make space. We feel the rhythm of the scene instead of rushing to make something happen.
What happens when we speed up? We create energy. We surprise. We make a partner laugh, react and play.
In this workshop we exploreThe rhythm of the scene as a tool for creating connection and spontaneity on stage.

Lauren: Genre Lab
Build clear, compelling worlds by using genre as a storytelling engine. We’ll use 4 different genres to look at how this shapes behaviour, tone, and stakes.

Javi: No Form
In the case of No Form, you cannot talk about a predetermined format, as it is something that reveals itself over the course of each individual performance. The initial arrangement of elements—such as boxes, chairs, flashlights, and even the improvisers themselves—by the audience will serve to shape the performance scores through these "actants," allowing us to discover the formal structures of the show.

David: Stagefight

Pierpaolo: Conflicts
A lot of scenes begin with conflict because it seems an easy thing to do, but it can lead to short-sighted scenes that have nowhere to go. This workshop offers a professional and transformative approach to crafting compelling conflict narratives. We will see the difference between fighting for and fighting against, status play, power dynamics, and how to disagree as characters while agreeing as performers. In this way, conflict will be a motor for story, rather than something that blocks it.

Come exercise those brain muscles to create GREAT shortform!
We'll play very challenging games, zoom in to what makes each game or game type tick, and hopefully have you laugh until you pee a little!

Javi: Sitcom
In this workshop, we work on creating an improvised sitcom. Our goal is to make twenty-minute episodes using the classic structure of television stories.
The work is inspired by John Vorhaus's book The Comic Toolbox (comic characters, comic premise, the eyebrow rule, the aggravator...).
An important figure to keep in mind will be the studio floor manager, prompting the audience to react during the story (laughter, surprise, emotional moments, the entry of the famous star...).
Some key references are Friends, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory...

Gizem: Finding the game

Pierpaolo: Group Scenes
Improv isn’t just about two-people always in the spotlight. Scenes are also made alive by everyone around them: the other customers in the bar, the other animals in the forest, the other books on the shelf. These “backscene” characters give depth, color, and energy, yet often we’re tempted to step out of the action when we’re not the main focus. In this workshop we’ll see how do we play groups of four, six, or more characters, keeping clarity. We’ll practice finding, giving, and taking focus, moving fluidly between front and back, and making the space come alive together. We’ll discover how to listen, react, and perform internal transitions, all while making the stage picture come alive.
